Why she rocks: She was a gospel singer, songwriter and recording artist who mixed spiritual lyrics and early rock and roll accompaniment. She would blur the line between sacred and secular music by performing spirituals in nightclubs with big bands. She became the first great recording star of gospel music in the late 30’s and became the “original soul sister” of recorded music.
